Barf Special: USS John P. Murtha, LPD-26

Posted April 18th, 2010 by Iron Mike

When I first heard this I was at a TEA Party in Lowell.  I couldn’t believe it.  The US Navy – OUR US Navy – has decided to name a still-to-be-built amphibious transport after career scumbag Penn Congressman John Murtha – who served briefly in Vietnam – and retired as a Colonel from the Marine Reserve.

Murtha LPD-26

Navy and Marine veterans in the crowd were visibly shaken at the news.  I damn near puked!

Murtha’s lack-luster Marine career began in 1952 – Korean War days – but he served stateside and was discharged in ’55.  But he stayed in the USMC Reserve and later volunteered of duty in Vietnam – where he won the usual Bronze Star and two John Kerry Purple Hearts.  In 1969 he ran for the Pennsylvania State Legislature and in ’74 won a seat in the newly created 12th District due to the death of the incumbent – John Saylor.

Murtha liked government.  Let him explain:

Murtha was always thumping his chest and proclaiming himself a “Combat Marine” – always claimed to be looking out for the troops.  You should also know about his airport, – you paid for it!

But his true colors showed most clearly in 2005 – when in a hysterical knee-jerk reaction to an unsubstantiated news story – he hysterically accused seven Marines from 3rd  Bn 1st Marines of killing unarmed civilians in Haditha.  All charges were later dropped – after lengthy investigations, except for SSG Wuterich.  Real Marines and real combat veterans from all of our wars have not forgiven Murtha for this unpardonable high-profile stab in the back.  You civilians need to understand how very illegal it was for him as a retired Colonel – in Congress – to influence an ongoing military criminal investigation.  He knew better!

We fully understand where it was coming from,  Murtha spent his “combat time” in a bunker.  And he was always “anti Bush / anti-war”.

I urge you good readers to take the time and send a written letter to the SecNav Ray Mabus:

Secretary of the Navy
The Honorable Ray Mabus
Office of the Secretary of the Navy
2000 Navy Pentagon
Washington, D.C. 20350-2000

Ask him to either reverse this onerous decision, – or to resign.  We need clearer minds and more honorable men leading our military.  Real Marines will be loathe to serve aboard – or even set foot aboard this ship.   Marines everywhere – you all deserve better!

Old Soldier, – Still Good for Parts!

BTW, there is speculation on the web that Mabus is looking for a cushy job with the shipbuilder – Northrop Grumman Corp.  Wouldn’t you know!

Why not the USS Jane Fonda?

. . . a desecration of the graves my son and all of those who died fighting for the Constitutional Freedoms and Rights we all enjoy. This sickens me.

I found the following in Blackfive this AM:

So now, many of you have written to us about the Navy’s plan to launch the USS John Murtha.

…The Navy is naming its newest San Antonio-class amphibious transport-dock LPD 26 for Murtha, the powerful chairman of the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee who became an outspoken and influential critic of the Iraq war.

Murtha died in February at age 77 after complications from gallbladder surgery.

San Antonio-class ships support Marines and can carry roughly 700 troops, their equipment and vehicles. They are usually named after cities; the USS Murtha will be a break from that tradition…

This is probably one of the worst administrative ideas in the history of the Navy (this might be number two) – to name a ship after Murtha and that ship will carry MARINES?! While I believe that a garbage scow should not carry his name, this is obviously pandering by the Navy.

This editorial over at the Washington Times (could of been written by Jimbo) says:

…It’s doubtful that the ship naming will do much to honor Murtha. The brave Marines and sailors who serve aboard this vessel probably will refer to it only as LPD 26 or come up with a colorful nickname like “Porky Pig” or the “Fat Bastard” (the Marine favorite). Perhaps Murtha could still be useful in supplying the ship’s slogan: “Cold Blooded Killers.”…

“Porky Pig” refers both to Murtha’s unrivaled ability to create government pork to benefit him and his family.

It just goes to show how far we’ve sunk (pun intended) in this morass that is the PresO administration. Another instance of shame for our military. This time from beyond the grave. Pathetic! rr

Incredibly, the Navy (yes, OUR Navy) apparently is planning to name a warship after the late John Murtha — a contemptible human being who served many years as a U.S. Congressman. A ragtag but vocal opposition movement is developing on Facebook.

Most of the opposition is because of Murtha’s remarks calling military personnel cold-blooded murderers. These “murderers” were later found innocent of the charges, and yet Murtha refused to apologize. You’d think that alone would be enough to keep the Navy from naming a ship after him.

But it’s not. It turns our that senior military and defense folks sell names of ships to career Congress critters (regardless of their character) in exchange for the politicians’ votes for military appropriations bills.

So let me add a bit more ammo on why this incredible scumbag should not have a warship named after him:

    1. This Wikipedia article details how Murtha (and others) was caught agreeing to take bribes in the Abscam scandal. He SHOULD have gone to jail — or at least thrown out of the House, but he was not — much to the shame of both Congress and the voters in his district.

    2. Murtha was a stain on democracy. Watch this stunning video of him temporarily chairing the House of Representatives. It’s what one expects to see in Third World dictatorships.

    3. Consider this “must watch” video (many of you have likely already seen it) on ABC News about the expensive but empty “John Murtha Airport” — one of those insane pork projects that deserves “Hall of Shame” status. A hundred million dollar airport Murtha funded with our tax dollars that handles three small planes carrying a total of 20 passengers a day.

    4. Murtha’s insolence is topped only by his corruption. Here’s a good website with several other examples demonstrating Murtha’s true character — or lack of same.

Yeah, some might say I’m beating a dead horse — but that’d be a gratuitous insult of all horses, both living and dead.

Dead Murtha’s despicable career in Congress is still an issue — but only because senior Navy numb-nuts deem him worthy of a ship name.

  6. Ed Goodgasell

As a retired Marine Corps Master Sergeant with more than twenty years service for my country, I am angered and enraged at the very idea of any honor for Murtha. The only thing that should bear his name is a latrine because he was and is a piece of crap.
