Jeff Bezos, Amazon Profits, and the Pedophile Book

Posted November 12th, 2010 by Iron Mike

Does billionaire Jeff Bezos care about kids?

Out in Colorado there is a very sick man.  Philip R. Greaves II [known as ‘Ray’] is a 47-year old retired ‘nurse’ who had lots of time on his hands.  He wrote a book for perverts, “The Pedophile’s Guide to Love and Pleasure” and was going to sell it as an e-book on Amazon.

Thank God some alert citizens got wind of it.  Amazon has pulled the book, at least for today.  Just yesterday the $24 Billion corporation was defending their decision to market it.

At one level we can see this story as the ongoing conflict between our 1st Amendment right of “free speech” vs our right and our duty to protect children from predators.

What kind of people would buy such a book – other than child predators?

Jeff Bezos – worth $12 B

Certainly Jeffrey Preston “Jeff” Bezos – the 46 year old wizard Princeton grad who founded Amazon understands this.  He’s worth $12 Billion.

Certainly Thomas J. Szkutak – Amazon’s CFO [20 years at GE] understands this.

So if they understand that by selling this garbage to child predators they are aiding and abetting them, – to the point that any victim may have direct legal recourse to them for damages, why would they ever sell such a book?

Profit?  Attention?  Publicity?  Liberal dogma?  Bezos has given a lot of $$ to über-liberal Senator Maria Cantwell.

Here’s my thought.  Some 31,200 people work at Amazon.  I’m pretty sure that most are honest, decent, hardworking folks.  Just on raw averages I’d doubt that any more than a random one or two are child sex perverts.  But somewhere in the upper ranks of Amazon, somebody put profit and publicity before common sense and child safety.

Amazon was hiding behind jargon:

“Amazon believes it is censorship not to sell certain books simply because we or others believe their message is objectionable,” the company said in a statement to “Amazon does not support or promote hatred or criminal acts, however, we do support the right of every individual to make their own purchasing decisions.”

So if Bezos and Szkutak can’t or won’t root them out and fire them,  we should all fire Amazon.

It’s already the Christmas shopping season, books are a thoughtful gift.  Buy your books through another source.  Leave Amazon high and dry with their Mister Greaves.  Let the Amazon stockholders bite the bullet.  Szkutak just sold 6,850 shares of stock in August; – maybe he saw this coming?

Amazon currently enjoys 65 million customers per month.  It will take more than just NOT BUYING from them to make your feeling felt.  Give them a call or send them a note:  WA Tel. 206-266-1000, Inc.
1200 12th Ave. South, Ste. 1200
Seattle, WA 98144-2734

Tell them to clean up their act!

Old Soldier, – Still Good for Parts!

UPDATE! Monday 5 August 2013 Billionaire Jeff Bezos suddenly bought the Washington Post for $250 Million – cash. Amazon not involved. That $250 Million represents an 87% DROP in VALUE over the past 10 years.

Sale occurred just six (6) days after Obama visited an Amazon facility in Chattanooga…

Good post. Thanks taking the time to find and put up the contact info.

I was listening to Kim Komando today on the radio as we drove across S Carolina… and she had just closed her account with Amazon due to this outrage. She urged all her listeners to do the same. I’m closing mine in the morning. rr

Isn’t there a difference between 1st Amendment rights and promoting something that promotes illegal activity? I’m a big fan of free speech but, come on.

What is worse – a pedophile or a billionare who profits from pedophiles? Think about this for a second, someone actually made a decision “Do we make money for the boss or harm children?” They sat in an office and weighted all of the facts and made the decision that a few hundred copies, I can’t and will not even think that this would sell more than that, was worth more than the lives of the few children it would permanantly damage. Yes they made a premeditated decision that a few children was worth it to put more money in Mr. Bezos pocket. You have a choice 1. Do nothing 2. Say you are upset and will think about a boycott 3. Actually BOYCOTT Amazon and side with Good over Evil. You get to choose. Can Amazon make this right? Yes they can – They can choose to support those who have been damaged by sexual abuse and to bring this quiet crime to the front.
