Do These Dots Connect?

November 5th:  Feds arrest 34 student pilots from Brazil taking flight training in Stow, MA.  They – and maybe their instructor – are all here illegally

Federal authorities mildly embarrassed.  We were assured that terrorism was not involved.

November 15th:  A story surfaces of South American drug cartels flying whole planeloads of cocaine to Africa for further smuggling into Europe.  They are using cheap second-hand airliners purchased at rock-bottom prices from US mothball fleets. Seems this is a growing problem.  And cocaine use by West Africans is suddenly a problem too.

Suddenly the little escapade of erstwhile student pilots at Stow just looking for cheap American gas as they earn their wings doesn’t seem ~ quite ~ so innocent?

What do I know..?  Drug cartels sending hundreds of illegals across our Arizona border each night with backpacks full of drugs.

As they trudge through the desert they pass some of our military and civilian airplane boneyards. Many of those planes are for sale cheap.  Hmmm… markets emerging in Africa and Europe where acceptance of drug use is nearly as easy as it is in San Francisco, Cambridge, and Acton.  Hmmm.  Why not go high tech?

Hmmm…we’ll need pilots… Poor desperate ones willing to take huge risks for BIG BUCKS.
