Army Pushes Mubarak Out

Tonight Egypt celebrates.  I pity their hangover . . .

But the fast-breaking news from Al Jazeera is that the Egyptian Army told Mubarak he was ‘stepping down’, handing power to VP Omar Suleiman and the military.  Per Suleiman:

“In these grave circumstances that the country is passing through, President Hosni Mubarak has decided to leave his position as president of the republic.  He has mandated the Armed Forces Supreme Council to run the state.  God is our protector and succor.”

Around the world the crowned heads and dictators – Islamic and secular – are looking to their Swiss bank accounts and their executive aircraft.  Imagine if the North Koreans get wind of this!  How about the Cubans?

Anybody remember when George W. Bush said that Iraq would be a beacon of freedom in the middle of the Islamic world?  Now let’s see if the Egyptians can turn tonight’s victory into a truly free and democratic country.  It wasn’t very easy for our founders after Yorktown.  It took years.
