The data coming back from autonomous vehicles has been pretty good until this incident. I’d be interested in seeing what the circumstances were.

Kojack, unless I am mistaken there have been a number of problems and accidents caused by the robot cars.

Yes, Sherox, there have been collisions involving autonomous vehicles but most of those were caused by HUMAN ERROR on the part of the other vehicle. This was the 1st FATALITY involving one whereas human error causes 1000’s of them per year. Granted there are many more human-driven vehicles on the road but remember autonomous vehicle technology is still in it’s infancy and that along with the downsides and there are a lot of benefits to be reaped from it.

Kojack, you DO understand that the ultimate goal is to replace all long-haul truck drivers with robotic trucks, – thus putting millions of folks OUT OF WORK…?

Yes, Mike, I knew that. It is one of the unfortunate downsides to autonomous technology but replacing the trucker’s will take a lot longer than is commonly anticipated due to the unloading procedures and delays that take place when the truck arrives at its destination, a process with which I am all too familiar. The distribution centers they dock at will have to be specially equipped and it will be many years before they can deliver to most docks in the U.S.

Some of the biggest beneficiaries of this new technology will be senior citizens and those with visual impairments or injuries who have lost the ability to drive and thus much of their independence.
