Ensign Screws Nevada – Again

Posted April 22nd, 2011 by Iron Mike

Sometimes you can just smell trouble – even when you can’t see it.

Back during the 2008 Campaign, Massachusetts had a great candidate to replace Lurch.  We had bona fide hero Jeff BeattyWHERE was the national support?  We were on our own.

Then we learned to our dismay that the man in charge of Republican Senate campaigns – US Senator from Nevada John Ensign had just spent two years having an affair with his own Campaign Finance Manager – Cynthia Hampton.

Cynthia was also high school buddies with John’s wife Darlene.

When the affair came to light, Ensign had helped Cynthia’s husband Doug get a couple of well-paying jobs.  AND, Ensign’s parents made Doug a hefty $93K ‘present’.

Supposedly the dust had all settled?  Nope!

Enter Stage Left the Senate Ethics Committee chaired by just-reelected California flaming liberal airhead Barbara Boxer.  She has persuaded the committee to hire a Special Prosecutor to dig into Ensign’s past campaign finances.  This will drag Doug and Cynthia Hampton – and Ensign’s parents – to Washington for sworn depositions and eventually sworn public testimony.  They might all become targets of criminal investigations.  This is the gun Boxer is holding at Ensign’s head.

[See what you did to us California?]

Do you think Skelator – Nevada’s Dirty Harry Reid – is grinning ear-to-ear?

On Thursday, John Ensign announced he will resign – effective immediately – May 3rd.

“It is with tremendous sadness that I officially hand over the Senate seat that I have held for eleven years.  The turbulence of these last few years is greatly surpassed by the incredible privilege that I feel to have been entrusted to serve the people of Nevada.   I can honestly say that being a United States Senator has been the honor of my life.”

Nevada’s Republican Governor Brian Sandoval will likely appoint 2nd District Congressman Dean Heller of Carson City to fill out Ensign’s term.

Heller will have to run for re-election next year.  The 2nd Congressional District will have to hold a special election to replace Heller.

Ensign can go back to his day job.  He is a veterinarian who owns several animal hospitals in the Vegas area.  Or maybe he’ll stick around as a K Street lobbyist.

Anybody see a movie in the works?  John, was she really worth it?  Really?
