Charlie Rangel Can’t Hire A Lawyer?

Posted November 15th, 2010 by Iron Mike

In one version maybe the Old Marine wants to die with his boots on. In the other – the arrogant crook figures this is yet another way to make his favorite move – play the race card and bluff the white kids. Today the NY Democratic Congressman representing Harlem, 80-year old Charlie Rangel announced before the House Ethics Sub-Committee that the law firm which has just spent 2 years and $2 Million preparing to represent and defend him – has quit. He claims to be without legal representation.  He wants more time.  He needs money for legal fees.

Then he walked out of the hearing room, and they proceeded to review the charges and the evidence against him, including numerous videos of his own admissions.

I figure there are three ways to look at today’s events:

  A.  The firm of Zuckerman Spaeder has spent enough time looking deeply into Rangel’s twisted finances and money laundering and doesn’t want to risk being charged either as a co-conspirator or an accessory after the fact.

  B.  The House Committee – led by Zoe Lofgren of California [certainly no ethical angel herself] wants to finish this trial and ‘put the matter to bed’ under Pelosi’s watch to limit the damages and the fallout, or…

  C.  The Democrat’s real plot is to carry the ordeal – now already two years old and smelling VERY ripe – into the 112th Republican-controlled Congress where Charlie can play his RACE CARD to the hilt – particularly if the Maxine Waters ethics case follows suit.

So Charlie pleaded for time, and for a way to find money to pay his new attorneys – if he can find any. It was briefly either great theater – or the pathetic final days of an unrepentant old crook looking to salvage some sort of respectable legacy from fifty years of living large on the public paycheck, and failing to pay a lot of taxes.

Sympathy?  Naah, this guy has been writing your tax codes for decades. He’s just grown accustomed to being above it all. Taxes are for taxpayers, not for congressmen like him!  He’s gambling that a Republican-led committee won’t have the nerve to punish a Black congressman. But they could, and strip him of his congressional pension too.

Charlie should have a quick chat with Duke Cunningham, and maybe Jim Traficant, then rethink his strategy.

UPDATE:  Tuesday Nov 16th GUILTY on 11 of 13 counts!

As of late this morning he was still complaining about the ‘unfairness’ of having the hearing without him having an attorney to represent him:

“How can anyone have confidence in the decision of the ethics subcommittee when I was deprived of due process rights, right to counsel and was not even in the room?  I can only hope that the full committee will treat me more fairly, and take into account my entire 40 years of service to the Congress before making any decisions on sanction.”

Well Charlie, the not even in the room‘ part was your own legs walking out.  Going to the grave claiming to be the victim all the way?

How long will it take the “Justice Brothers” Jessie and Al to leap into the fray waving the race card for poor old Charlie? Will Jim Clyburn, in his new position, and the Black Caucus come to the aid of old Charlie? Will the voters in Harlem, Charlie’s district, who just re-elected him for his umpteenth term, riot in the streets for old Charlie? I guess only time will tell who comes to the aid of old Charlie.

None of this is surprising. Wrangel is a typical democrat and this is a page right out of their playbook. He would fit right in with the local MassHoles.
