Boxborough Teacher: Child Porn Charges

Posted August 6th, 2010 by Iron Mike
UPDATE: Friday, April 1st 2011: Judge George O’Toole sentenced him to 18 months and 5 years probation.  He got off easy.  He’ll be back.
UPDATE: Wed, Dec 1st:  He pleaded GUILTY!
UPDATE:  Tuesday, August 10th [Ugly – see below]

ANOTHER ONEAndrew Cheever, 33 of Lowell [near Billerica] was arraigned on Dec 17th for having 10,000 child porn images and videos.  He is a former TSA employee.  Out on $15K bail, due for a pretrail conference Jan 17th

Oh say it isn’t so Larry.  Say it just isn’t so.

Boxborough parents must be wondering what they’ve been paying those super-high property taxes for lately.  Fourth Grade teacher and member of the Teacher’s Union bargaining committee Lawrence Follett of 10 Alpine Street, North Billerica has been charged by the Feds – ICE – on a number of CHILD PORN charges

That’s going to upset the start of the school year.  To make matters worse he worked summers as a camp counselor at Camp Moosilauke [all boys] in New Hampshire.

Mister Follett was a buyer and seller of photos and videos of young boys performing sex acts.  His activities were discovered by Swiss investigators in 2008.  In June 2009 his home was raided by ICE and Boxborough and Billerica police.  His arrest came today.  With his attorney he saw a judge.  He’s getting to spend his first weekend in the clink – awaiting a bail hearing Monday.

I’m wondering how many other teachers in our “agenda-rich” school system he’ll end up ratting out.  I know at least one fellow who must be sweating tonight!

Remember People, the Acton-Boxborough school system begins teaching kids about alternate life styles very early.  Anybody care to rethink that now?

UPDATE:  Tuesday, August 10th   per the Lowell Sun this morning:

“According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Follett, of 10 Alpine St., allegedly downloaded hundreds of child-porn videos and images. At least three of the images of prepubescent boys were children listed on the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.”

Folks, we’ve had a lot of hits on this entry, and a lot of comments – a few of which were either caught by the spam-catcher or that we removed.  Many people wrote to defend “a wonderful teacher”. I answered several folks privately suggesting they withhold their defense of this man until ALL the facts are out.  The Feds didn’t wait a year without reason.

People who once [or still] admired Follett will have a hard time coming to grips with the depths of ugliness this case presents.  Most people are willfully ignorant of the sick evil world of child pornography.  I tried to explain a little of it in my answer to one spammed commenter.  The whole point is that to make these videos, kids are routinely kidnapped, molested on camera – often for months, – then murdered.  The sickest part is that the manufactures of this stuff do it for both pleasure and profit

And, these perverts tend to live, work, and do their evil in clusters.  This guy is is unlikely to be the only one around here.

  ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ my email to one commenter:

Good Morning “AB Resident”,

>> You truly are a piece of trash.

That statement alone was probably why our spam-catcher put your comment into the spam bucket. I thought for a little while about allowing it, because we do encourage opposing points of view. But three readings later I still find nothing but a baseless attack, i.e. no grounds for your statements.

For instance, do you actually know this teacher?  Did you or your kid have him?  Is this why you are attacking me, without defending the accused pervert?

If you care to leave a more well thought out comment – one that adds something of value to the discussion, please do so.

BUT, before you say something as inane as “…I wouldn’t be surprised if you were the one who took the pictures this guy looked at“,  I think you should take several moments to consider the depth of depravity embodied in the child pornography business.

  • Perhaps Mister Follett only ~ looked ~ at child pornography. The published report suggests he at least traded images within the kiddie-porn network.
  • Perhaps he sold images. And there is the rub. We still don’t know because all the evidence has not yet been presented and made public. The fact that they waited a year to actually arrest him makes me believe he is just part of a MUCH wider investigation.
  • You should consider carefully how such pictures are obtained. You should know that there is a whole world of perverts secretly photographing and videotaping children left in their care by trusting parents. A few sickies actually film their own kids.
  • But it gets far far worse.  What do you ~ think ~ happens to many of the children who routinely disappear? If you have never thought about this until right now, please do so – right now. The worst animals in the “kiddie-porn business” steal children, use them, abuse them, sell the pictures through their underground networks – worldwide, and then either sell the kids into sexual slavery in countries where it flourishes, – or kill the kid and go steal another. It is the most evil of businesses, and it flourishes because perverts will pay to watch the videos.

So you STILL think that I might have been the photographer? Even at my age I would suggest you think twice about saying that to my face. Given that your ISP address leads to Leval, Canada, – maybe you’re not all that brave.

So, a Boxborough 4th Grade teacher and boys camp counselor has been caught red-handed with kiddie-porn, – and in your eyes I am a piece of trash?

Would you like to try growing up a bit before you post another comment or a reply?

    This is happening in Boxborough? What’s next? I wonder if they’ll make him union steward so that he can’t be fired? I wonder if any action will be taken at all. I hope so, but don’t really hold out much hope that anything will be done. I’m sure there’s a logical explanation for it all. Now, if he turns out to be Republican??? That’d be a different story, of course. rr

  2. Susan Jones

    He is a Republican. Check on this website http://www.voterfactory.com/Billerica_MA_David–Fleming_James-Frawley_5968.html

  3. Rabid Republican

    Not good data from this site. The street address doesn’t match Mr. Follett’s address in the news story… and, a check of many people I know very well has at least half of them attributed to the wrong party. Maybe he is… maybe he isn’t. Only his hairdresser knows for sure. 🙂 rr

  4. Boxborough Resident

    Are you seriously accusing the AB school system’s policy of teaching acceptance of diversity of being to blame for Follett’s actions? That is patently ridiculous. When will you be able to tell the difference between pedophiles and people who don’t follow heteronormative societal standard? Gay does not equal child molester any more than straight does.

    Also we must remember that Follett was a favorite teacher of generation of Boxborough children. It is a tragedy that he is the one that ended up having such a sickness. It is disgusting of you to accuse other teachers of having the same illness just because they are “liberal”.

  5. ironmike

    Hi, welcome to RRB! Your first time?

    No, I am NOT equating child pedophiles with gayness. Frankly I don’t think it’s been studied enough for anybody to speak with authority one way or the other. I don’t think the seemingly endless parade of female teachers seducing underage male pupils is a measure of gayness, – just some strange individual need and a lack of self control. I’m reasonably certain for instance that Mary Kay LeTourneau isn’t gay.

    I do see a parallel between the many school systems that look the other way when incidents occur, and that quickly distance the school to minimize liability, – with the behavior of the various dioceses of the Catholic Church for decades as they ignored, covered up, and reassigned pedophile priests. The Catholic Church has a growing scandal with gay priests – including a recent exposé of priests in Rome. I don’t know if there is any overlap.

    I think that schools in general, and AB in particular have taken upon themselves – in an abundance of ‘we know best’ arrogance – the teaching of sexuality way too early in our children’s lives. The Lexington case sticks in my craw. The play The Laramie Project is another. Gays insist the kid was killed for being gay. He was killed for the drugs he had on him. The goons had no idea what he was.

    I think many gay people have a need that runs parallel to their sexual preferences, and that is to shove it into the faces of the general population as often, as rudely, and as flagrantly as possible. In doing so I see them making enemies of people who would be otherwise sympathetic, or even allies. The yearly crashing of the various St Patty’s Day parades is a perfect example. Pushing the “Day of Silence” in the schools strikes me as bullying straight kids.

    I think it is way too early in the proceedings for you or anyone to separate and or disavow Follett’s criminal activity from his sexual preferences. We just don’t know. Is he gay? Do you know? He did take a year off teaching and went on a long cross-country jeep trip with a male teacher from Connecticut – who was also a counselor at the boy’s camp. Hmmm.

    As for me being “disgusting”, after I watched a particular teacher’s actions, [which I felt then and still do was nothing less than trolling] – and after I got ZERO response from the principal and the Superintendent, I home schooled my son in that subject for the year. I warned that Superintendent [since retired] that there was trouble lurking in his school system.

    So today I think it’s only a matter of time. I think Follett’s computer drives may give up some “friends” and he may be willing to give up a few more to cut a deal. Peoples’ views of this teacher may change when they’ve seen the evidence, – particularly if Boxborough images were being sent around the pedophile world network. I think if certain computers in our school system are checked there will be more headlines.

    Does any of this have anything to do with gayness? I’m not sure, but I think there is a fuzzy borderline between some legal gay activities, some marginal ones, and some that are patently illegal. Again, I think the school systems – all of them – should butt OUT of teaching sexuality to kids. And I think that school systems and teachers unions should start policing their ranks, and not playing the cover-up game.

    And I think you need to hold off on your knee-jerk defense of gayness in general, until we know a lot more about this case. The campers have yet to be heard from. The evidence has yet to be presented. But if I had a kid in the AB system any younger than mine, – I’d damn sure be demanding a school-wide check of all teachers’ computers!

    Again, thanks for clicking in, and thanks for caring enough to leave a comment. We hope you’ll read some of the rest of our entries. We work hard to make them interesting, factual, reasonably short, and worthy of your time.

    I can’t believe someone actually is making the claim that your article blamed the AB policy for Follett’s actions. At no point does the text in any way indicate that the two (the policy and Follett’s actions) are linked. I took that to simply mean that since one can logically surmise from the AB policy that those in charge of the administration are sympathetic to the homosexual cause, and since that sympathy has been used as a basis for early age teachings on the subject, that, perhaps, this sympathy has led to the administration being more tolerant than it otherwise might be towards people such as Follett is alleged to be.

    That being said, as someone who was forced to listen to the BS liberal claptrap that was thrust upon me over my years at AB I can say that I am truly sick of hearing about how we all need to be “more tolerant.” Pardon my language but, what a load of shite. The Acton school system could hardly be more tolerant of alternative lifestyles. I graduated in the early 90’s and even then we had something called the Diversity Acceptance Coalition as well as whole days devoted to “awareness” and things like that. I don’t think the problem was, is, or has ever been that people weren’t enough “aware” of gayness. The problem is that people just weren’t receptive enough of it for some’s liking.

    The only people I see that are suffering from a lack of acceptance and/ or tolerance of their “chosen” lifestyle are heterosexual people. The fact that the school system chooses to shove these ideas down my throat and continues to do so is abhorrent. Leave it alone. Real education is teaching a child HOW to think; not teaching him WHAT to think. If a kid doesn’t want to accept homosexuality then give him the tools and knowledge to make an educated decision on his own and then accept his decision as that of a free and independent human being. I personally don’t see too many diversity advocates that are very accepting of what I would call a “normal” lifestyle. Those calling for diversity and acceptance are the least tolerant of all and will stop at nothing short of absolute capitulation of the heterosexual “community.”

    I wonder how tolerant the AB school system would be if a student wanted to start up a Hetero Acceptance Coalition. You’re lying to yourself if you think the administration would allow that to function, much less provide assistance, guidance and support as they did for the DAC in my day.

    I don’t think that most conservative people I know are intolerant of gays at all. I think we’re all tired of hearing about it period. We don’t care what you do with yourselves just don’t tell us about it –much like I don’t run around in parades with placards declaring how proud I am to be hetero. Certain things are just innapropriate.

    IT’s very simple for gay people to avoid being discriminated against whereas, say, for black people it was next to impossible. Just don’t tell anyone you’re gay. They won’t know and it’ll be impossible to discriminate. There’s no need to teach kids about it. Making a claim that they shouldn’t have to cover up who they are is without weight. I don’t go into my job and tell people that I’m heterosexual because such topics have no place in the workplace. Co-workers are free to assume whatever they want about me. I don’t care. I certainly don’t want to hear any coworkers or fellow students or anyone else spouting off about their sexuality. That’s between you and your therapist. You do what you want but leave me out of it.

    As for this teacher in Boxborough, well, I think Mike is right. You made a knee jerk response that was ill thought out. Mike’s post doesn’t make any claim that the policy of teaching kids about “alternative lifestyles” at an early age is linked to this man’s alleged actions. It does suggest that people who have been willing to look the other way towards an administration that there is ample evidence to suggest might have reason to cover something like this up should start speaking out. Teaching of sexuality of any stripe to children is improper for a school system to be doing. the fact that they present a one sided view of human sexuality is shameful. (I don’t recall ever learning anything about heterosexuality being ‘OK’ or anything of the kind. Just that I had to learn to accept people for who they are but that only ever seemed to apply to gay people). Well, sorry, but I don’t. I don’t have to accept murderers, or rapists, or peole who fall into any number of other categories.

    It’s time for the gay community to shut the hell up and stop complaining. You live in the most tolerant place on Earth. If it turns out that this teacher is guilty of what he’s been charged with then he deserves to be punished for what he has done. If he’s not, then he deserves to be exonerated of all charges publicly so that his name isn’t defamed further. Regardless of what happens, the issue is that the AB school system is at least partly to blame for this person being in their charge since there is no doubt that their policy of forced diversity in hiring led to his being on the payroll in the first place. He may be a very good teacher but one can’t ignore the liklihood that his behavior was not only tolerated but promoted by an administration that has sought for decades to ram it’s acceptance of “alternative lifestyles” down the citizens’ throats.

    Let the man have his day in court. He deserves nothing less than the presumption of innocence until proven guilty by a jury of his peers. If he’s innocent, let us that called out his name be the first to apologize to him for so doing. If he’s not, let justice be served. But please, all of you out there, stop whining about perceived injustices towards the gay community when everything I have seen for my entire life only proves that the cards are completely stacked in your favor. You only cheapen your own stance by shooting from the hip and repeatedly telling people like me that I’m wrong simply because I don’t share your beliefs.

  7. g

    ok ironmike you say we havent heard from the campers… well i was a camper and knew mr. follet well and i can tell you that you do not know enough to be making the claims you are making and saying such things… he was a good man and i am extremely suprised to hear this… and i can guaruntee he never had any inapproiate actions with camper

  8. H

    Per request of commenter: If you are willing, I would appreciate it if you could remove my initial posting. Last night I was sad and angry, as you could tell, spouting support for the man I remember. I DO NOT, however, support the man who has done these things. Our community is deeply saddened by this and working through it.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Things like this are ALWAYS hard to understand and come to grips with. We understand and we sympathize. We just can’t ignore these things, considering the number of kids going through our über-liberal school system.
  9. asusue
    As to the comment by H. Wait, am I missing something? The fact that the man is gay has NOTHING to do with the fact that he had scads of porm featuring under age boys?
  10. Rabid Republican
    H: You know, I’m getting tired of this debate… being gay is either a way you’re born, or something you choose, or a sickness. You can’t change the cause just because the circumstances would present a more sympathetic view. This guy obviously has serious issues. When it’s a hetero person, we don’t blame it on gay-ness… but, in this case, it certainly seems to apply. Stop making excuses for these vermin. rr
  11. AB Alum
    I also regret to inform the person going by “g” above that he simply cannot guarantee that this person Follett (yes, mr. G., we capitalize the first letters of proper names in the English language) never had inappropriate contact with a camper. I’m sorry, were you there every single year he was a counselor? Even if that were true, which I highly doubt, were you with this person for every second, in his presence, in each and every year he worked there? No? Well then, please explain to me how you can “guarantee” that there wasn’t any inappropriate contact? If you can then he has nothing to fear, right? All you have to do is show up at the courthouse on the day of his trial and tell the jury. “Hey, I personally guarantee that this man never had any inappropriate contact with any of the boys.” That should be enough to get all charges dismissed on the spot, don’t you think? Oh, wait, that’s right, possession of child pornography in and of itself is a crime. So, whether or not he’s guilty will be left up to the people and the court to decide but please don’t demean yourself by making sweeping statements that you can’t possibly back up.
    Why don’t you ask yourself this: If you had a son or daughter, and you knew that someone who was in charge of their care commonly engaged in on line child pornography purchases, even if you had 100% proof that this person had never ACTED physically in any way toward a child in his care, would you not still demand that the person be removed frmo a position of authority over your child? (hint, if you answer ‘no’ to this question you have no business raising children). No one has said that Mr. Follett was or is guilty of doing anything illegal. We have mostly said that someone under suspicion of such things should not have been allowed to remain in a teaching position at an elementary school and that if school policy is in fact even part of the reason why this person was hired and/ or kept on after ICE and local police raided his home any sane person has to question said policy as severely flawed and ill conceived.
    I do know that I can’t recall hearing of many (if any) incidents of a heterosexual person molesting children or being caught in a job as a teacher or counselor when known to or suspected of possession of child pornography material. I hear tons of cases (priests, this case, many others that I don’t have time to recall at present) of pedophiles in positions of authority over children getting involved with children of the same sex. I’m sick and tired of the gay community trying to claim that “this isn’t a gay thing, it’s a pedophilia thing.” Really, cause all the evidence would support the idea that it is 100% a gay thing. If it wasn’t there’d be just as many stories in the news about male teachers molesting little girls. But there isn’t. It’s time for the gay community at large to admit that this problem exists and to gang together against anyone in their ranks who even hints at this kind of behavior. TO not do so is to contribute to giving gayness a bad name.
  12. AB Alum
    I’d also like to add a caveat to my posts above. In no way to I support the government’s postition on this or any other case. As someone who has personally experienced the depravity of the “justice” system I may be one of the few Americans left who truly and honestly believes in innocence until proven guilty. I find it very suspicious that authorities raided this man’s home and then failed to charge him with anything for at least a year afterward. I’m sure they will claim that they were putting together a case against a much larger child pornograpy ring but try telling that to any of the children that were exploited (I’m not saying any were) by this guy in the interim while they’re putting a case together. The authorities have a duty to protect citizens. If they know or suspect someone is planning a murder they have a duty to act immediately to prevent it from happening. It could be said that they were simply strengthening their case in this year plus span but it could also just as easily be surmised that they chose not to file charges against Follett because under the Constitution he has a right to a speedy trial. Should his trial proceed relatively quickly they might not have the time to put a case together against him. BUT, they must have had enough evidence at some point to secure a search warrant for his home. If that wasn’t enough to convict him along with whatever they found in his house then they need to drop the case and move on and stop wasting his time.
    No one should delude themself to think that Federal or state authorities have anything but they most nefarious of intentions. They get paid to prosecute and convict. When they get a lead on a potential suspect their goal immediately shifts from finding out the entire truth about what happened to putting together a case solid enough to convict the person they are focused on. Any evidence they uncover in their investigation that might exonerate that person will simply be lost or never mentioned in court. They do this because once they’ve spent so much money going down one path they cannot justify starting over from scratch and they truly do not believe in seeing justice served. THey believe in advancing thier careers and the only way to do that is to put a case together and make it stick. They will obfuscate the truth and falsify evidence in even the smallest of matters. They do not care if you are guilty or not, they care only about what they need to have in hand to convict YOU of the crime.
    If you doubt that this is true ask yourself this: In all of the murder, rape, etc. cases I’ve seen in the news in my life, in every case in which the accused has ultimately been found not guilty, has any effort at all ever once been spent on continuing the investigation once the trial is over? I challenge anyone to come up with a single example of a police force realizing the person they are fingering is innocent and shifting focus or discovering at trial that the person is innocent and then redoubling efforts to find the real culprit. I’ll be surprised if anyone can find one.
    This policy can only logically be explained by the fact that once police charge someone with something it is assumed that they not only have the right person but that that person is also guilty and that the only way that person will “Get off” is on some technicality. It’s horseshit, and it is the way it is.
    I will give Follett the benefit of the doubt but if they went into his home and found this material on his personal computer I don’t see that there’s really much room for argument in that case. Unless he has some good excuse for how those images got on a computer that only he had access to. We’ll wait and see but it doesn’t look good for Follett. In any case, I hope he has a good attorney because the minute they suspected him the cards were severely stacked against him.
  13. g
    firstly i would like to say that i am not required by law to capitalize the g so i will not capitalize it… secondly you mr. (AB alum) are one of the most narrow-minded individuals in the world… your statement-
    I do know that I can’t recall hearing of many (if any) incidents of a heterosexual person molesting children or being caught in a job as a teacher or counselor when known to or suspected of possession of child pornography material. I hear tons of cases (priests, this case, many others that I don’t have time to recall at present) of pedophiles in positions of authority over children getting involved with children of the same sex. It’s time for the gay community at large to admit that this problem exists and to gang together against anyone in their ranks who even hints at this kind of behavior.     is totally false… women teachers have been raping male students and if you look at statistics im sure women outnumber men when it comes to those who are teaching… and i also sense that you have some bias towards the church… i hope you change or learn how to be open minded because your argument was HORRIBLE, let me repeat that… HORRIBLE! go find out more about this guy… who he is… what he was like… im not excusing his actions which were horrible but i still feel you are wrong
  14. g
    To add on you are a complete homophob which is terrible… you seem like a horrible, redneck who wasnt raised right and if you have children you are not raising them right either
  15. Rabid Republican
    g: A homophobe? Well, I’m not afraid of gays, as the term homophobe would imply. I’m not one. And I don’t go around to every other person proclaiming my heterosexuality. I don’t think it’s any of their business. Gays would do better for themselves if they kept it private, too. It’s no one’s business. Why, then, do they feel it’s some “badge of honor” to put it in my face?
    As for your other comment about female teachers raping students and outnumbering men. Have you looked at the stats? How does the percentage of women raping students (compared with all female teachers) compare to the equivalent percentage of men raping students (compared with all male teachers)? I doubt you have, and neither have I. Until you do, you can’t make a statement like you did above. I can’t either.
    I think the most telling statement you’ve made is at the end of your second last post… where you said “…but I still feel you are wrong.” People without the facts always “feel” that they are correct. Simply because they are unencumbered by real data or information.
    rr
  16. AB Alum
    Wait, “g,” let me get this right: my argument is horrible for some unknown reason since you neglect to support your case. BUT, your argument that “women teachers have been raping male students and…im [sic] sure women outnumber men when it comes to those who are teaching…” is sound? So, to follow your “logic”: some female teachers have raped students. In the teaching industry females outnumber males by some unmentioned ratio. Therefore, more female teachers are raping male students then the other way around? Have I got that right? That’s some superior intellect you’ve got there. The two facts (and they are facts, I wouldn’t dispute you on either) are not in any way related. Women may outnumber men in the teaching industry ten to one and that in no way relates to how many are violating their students. That being said, I don’t know if you’re male or female, but I was once a pubescent male and I can tell you for certain that you can’t rape the willing. I’ve heard of several cases in the past decade where pretty, young female teachers have been caught engaging in sex acts with male students…but they were in almost every case over the age of consent in that state. (Yes, contrary to popular belief the age of consent is NOT 18. In Massachusetts it’s 16. In many states it’s 14) Look it up. While this activity may be illegal under state’s law it is certainly vastly different from purchasing pictures of children under the age of 10 performing sex acts on adults. I know of no case where a woman was found to be collecting child pornography images or videos. If some such case exists, please, educate me. Point it out to me.
    I am not, as you say, narrow minded. If you point it out to me I will happily admit that I am wrong to you and everyone on here. I am, though, a realist. I am not bound by any allegiance to a group nor a desire to protect anyone or convince anyone of anything. I look at facts and I formulate an educated opinion based on what I see. I do my best to make sure that I haven’t left a “stone unturned” as the saying goes. This is why I ask you to provide me with evidence to support your claim. If I’m wrong then I want to change my opinion and stance on this issue. The fact is that I’ve had this discussion with many people -both gay and straight- over the years and no one to date has ever produced evidence to support the claim.
    You obviously feel very strongly about this so you must follow current events that pertain to this topic, right? Send me a link. There must be troves of stories in the newsmedia about the thousands of women participating in child porn and molesting their underage students. If it’s so common it can’t be hard to find, right? Google is your friend. Use it and prove me wrong.
    As for an allegiance to the church, ha. You know nothing about me but I certainly do not attend church nor do I believe in its’ teachings. I have been through more life changing tragedies in the past decade than most people could ever endure and this has left me both jaded and wary of God’s supposed love for me as one of his subjects. I’m not sure that’s relevant anyway, since my mention of priests was only to say that they had been in the news for being involved with child pornography. I have nothing against the church. I was raised Catholic and someday I hope to make my peace with that institution because I think it is a force for good in the World. But I cannot overlook that there isn’t one single case of a male priest (Again, that I’m aware of. I only know what I pick up in the news etc.) molesting a little girl. If this “isn’t a gay thing” as you keep adamantly saying, then why aren’t girls being preyed opon by priests? I can tell you that a heterosexual person wouldn’t molest a boy simply because one was available. Hetero people aren’t interested in people of the same sex regardless of their age.
    My argument was sound because it presented a case which I openly admitted was based only on what I had seen or heard with facts that were attached via standard logic: i.e. I hear about men being caught with kiddie porn all the time. I seldom hear about women being caught with it. Those men that I hear about are almost invariably interested in children of the same sex. Therefore, one can reasonably conclude that the majority of those participating in child pornography are of the homosexual ilk. There are no holes in that logic. NONE! I openly admit that this is purely based on what I have seen and I have challenged you several times to prove me wrong. You can’t or won’t do so.
    I’m not sure I can even touch intelligently on your last point but I’ll try. You’re asking me to “go find out more about this guy…who his is…what he was like…” as if years of being an outwardly decent individual somehow offset or negate his alleged actions involving kiddie porn. Everyone said Ted Bundy was a great guy too. And, on the surface, the Ted that most people knew really was a good guy…except for that raping and murdering part. Well, there was that. Your actions define who you are. Just because you’re good at covering up certain actions so that others don’t see them doesn’t make the facsimile of a person that you present to the World at large the real you. It makes you a facade and a sham and anyone that is your friend based upon a distorted understanding of who you are ought to be angry with you for representing yourself as someone you’re not.
    I personally don’t give a crap if the man devoted 25 years to helping starving children in Rwanda. That mean that we have to look the other way at his alleged actions in this case. If you conduct yourself that way I hope I never am put in a position that I become your friend under false pretenses.
    I am, in fact, one of the most open minded people I know. The fact that in this case I don’t agree with you hardly means that I am closed minded. It only means that our opinions differ. But isn’t that just like a liberal? You can have any opinion you want so long as its exactly like mine.
    You should stop stamping your foot in indignation and come back at us with some real facts. I lay my challenge again. If I am wrong, prove it to me. Not only will you have helped your cause but you’ll gain the respect of everyone on this forum for having the guts to back up what you say. Anyone can throw rhetoric and hyperbole around and call names and point fingers. A decent and honest person only does so when it is justified and they can support their actions with something more substantial than “I don’t like your argument so you’re wrong.”
    I won’t hold my breath waiting for your supporting evidence.
    I STAND CORRECTED
  18. caring parent
    are you sure you should have photos of children next to this discussion? That doesn’t seem like decent or respectful of the children
  19. kester
    oh my god there is a picture of me on the republican blog!!!!!!
    im notorious
    im the fat one who’s balding on the far left!!!!!
  20. ind/conserv
    Seriously, you should remove the picture of the children! Do you have kids? Would you want their picture posted on someone’s blog? Just because something is legal, doesn’t make it right!
  21. ind teacher
    I worked at that school for several years, and when this news came out, I can honestly say, I’m not surprised. Follett made a point of being very involved in many aspects of those boys lives. They often came to his room after school to do “jobs” for him. Filing papers, cleaning the chalkboards, etc… He was befriending them.
    While I don’t think he ever actually touched one of those kids, that doesn’t mean that he didn’t think about it or wasn’t working his way up to it. Looking at pictures is first in the process… All these parents at the school should feel lucky that this was caught early BEFORE he had a chance to do damage to someone’s child.
  22. shocked
    Maybe I’m naive, but as another former colleague of Mr. Follett, I was completely shocked to hear this. First of all, maybe I’m missing something, but at least when I worked there working at Blanchard did not mean you worked for the Acton-Boxborough Regional School District. It was a separate entity with its own principal/superintendent. So that district wouldn’t have had anything to do with this. I think it sounds like this was handled very well by those in authority. My heart goes out to everyone in the community and I truly hope no students there were harmed.
    But I really don’t see how ind teacher or anyone else could not be surprised by this. Mr. Follett came across to me in the time I worked with him as a skillful and caring educator, and I wished at the time that I had the classroom management skills and rapport with students that he had. I often came away from conversations with him with interesting insights into classroom situations that I would not otherwise have thought of. To me, this has been the ultimate example of how you never can tell who the “bad guys” are, and is pretty scary for me as a parent of a kindergarten student (not in Boxborough). I hope that the parents and students in Boxborough can come through this time with a sense of peace.
  23. TMurph
    Larry personally inspired me to take an interest in the lives of kids. The people who know Larry personally are confident in his character although he has made a mistake. No matter your politics, Larry will be living with this for the rest of his life. This is a sad story, not cause for people to be getting indignant and self-righteous on the internet. Does it make you a better Christian to condemn someone? Does it make you more conservative? Does it do anything at all but produce more strife and wasted energy?
    This is a criminal matter that will be resolved by the justice system of the United States. None of you are victims here. Obviously the actions of Larry were regrettable and wrong, but the fact that he was a teacher and camp councilor have nothing to do with the charges which Larry currently faces. The useless hate and guise of morally correct conservatism add to the ignorance. Larry made a difference in so many kid’s lives in an extremely positive way, and nothing and no one can change the past, we can only hope to lead better lives.
    What are you people getting out of this? Hopefully you sleep better knowing that you’ll never have to look past the surface of anything, on some real shit.
    g what up.
    everybody start repenting.
  24. redsox
    i have knwon larry for years. he is a great guy who has a disease. all of you saying bad things about him can shut the fuck up right now and leave him alone.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Redsox442 has been sent a private answer and a caution on the use of foul language.

  25. redsox

    and everybody listen to tmurph. i know him and he’s right. I went to camp with larry. he did change the lives of so many kids including myself. he made a mistake but his charges have nothing to do with him being a camp counselor.

  26. Fish

    G, TMurph, redsox(although idk who that is) and I all went to camp with Larry. This came as a huge shock to me personally, Larry would have been one of the last people I could see doing this. Larry was a great guy at camp, and never once had any issues there. This was a terrible crime that Larry has committed and he will be paying for it for the rest of his life.

    This being said, I do have some gripes with ironmike. Im sorry but you need to get it out of your head that this has anything to do with Larry being gay or not. First, I dont understand what it matters whether he is gay or not. Throughtout one of the earlier posts you mention the fact that he might be gay but we dont know due to a lack of information, which is correct in my opinion. But stop there, theres no need to make the same point 6 different times in different words. It makes you seem like you dont even care about the fact that, that isnt a crime and not what he was arrested for. For example you say…

    “We just don’t know. Is he gay? Do you know? He did take a year off teaching and went on a long cross-country jeep trip with a male teacher from Connecticut – who was also a counselor at the boy’s camp. Hmmm.”

    So before I get to the comment about camp and the trip, just stop. Look at the comment, Is he gay? Do we Know…..blah blah blah. Maybe the 3rd or 4th time you mention him possibly being gay but we dont know. Get back to that fact that the crime is for ‘child’ pornography. As for him going on a road-trip with his friend from camp, are you seriouse with that garbage?? What does that have to do with his criminal case? Please enlighten me when you can make that connection. I also happend to know who he went with and was able to see pictures from the trip. So please, if your going to try and kick someone when they are already down get realevant information to do it with.

    As for kids from camp, many of us were totally shocked to hear the news. My self and others have had numerous amazing, and life changing expirences at camp that involve Larry. Although last time I saw him he was kicking me out of the camp, it is hard for me to imagine him like this now. Obviously he has some issues that need to taken care of, but that is not a reason for people to beat a dead horse and tell him hes a terrible person and so forth. Maybe we should try and help him instead of making comments that put him down further, I’m hes taken plenty of scrutiny in the past couple months.

    murph, g…wats good fellas. nice to see a little support for Larry.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Gee, I think I’m about to be a little BLUNT here Fish,
    1. Pull your head out of your ass. Larry had three (3) photos of missing and exploited kids. These are kids who are kidnapped, raped repeatedly on camera, and then murdered. He PAID for the pictures – making him guilty of FUNDING their murders.
    2. I don’t know if Larry is gay. I also don’t know where the dividing line is drawn between a pervert, a pedophile, and a gay man. If you have some special insight to this area, please explain it for the world.
    3. Larry is as a minimum a pervert – a dangerous one who kept pictured of young children being raped. He KNEW it was wrong – he kept the computer device [flash drive] hidden. He made his entire life’s work to be around young children – boys – both in the fourth grade classroom and at summer camp.
    I don’t give a frig if you ‘liked” or “respected” the guy – he is a PERVERT. If you can’t wrap your head around that – you are either living in denial or are likely a pervert-in-training yourself.
    Instead of ‘supporting Larry’ – think about all the kids he may have harmed over the decades – who are still keeping silent. Think of the three murdered kids.
    And remember that Larry was caught because these perverts work in clusters. There are more of them around.
    Go visit the website http://www.badbadteacher.com
    Angrily,
  27. tmurph
    ANOTHER former Follet student who STILL doesn’t get it. Helps explain why perverts and pedophiles get off so easy in Massachusetts:
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    2. I don’t know if Larry is gay. I also don’t know where the dividing line is drawn between a pervert, a pedophile, and a gay man. If you have some special insight to this area, please explain it for the world.
    I know the difference: a pervert is someone who deviates from the norm (usually sexually) with a negative connotation. A pedophile is someone who desires sex with children. Gays are people who sexually prefer the same sex. The percentage of gay Americans is estimated at about 13%. Gays can legally marry in your state. Gays aren’t deviants; they are all around you. Being gay isn’t a choice, but I’m sure you wouldn’t agree with that. Its also not irresponsible or “wrong”.
    The assumption that gays are miscreants who are sexually corrupt, and the notion that gays are pedophiles doesn’t belong in this day and age. What other cultural myths do you still believe in?

    As for caring about the children, this website still displays images of innocent children from a summer camp, kids whose parents would certainly not approve them being used to pander ignorance.

    Making Larry directly complicit in the rape and murder of children is a pretty huge leap in logic. Larry is about to serve his time for the crime he was committed of. No one, anywhere, ever, would condone any practice involving the exploitation of children; we all agree about this. Implying that because of his conviction, Larry has harmed more kids is not fair, prove your point if you want to make it. Assumptions aren’t to be presented as facts.

    So many people have come forward and been in put in this position: we see overwhelming intolerance pointed at a man we knew and loved and we want to defend him. We don’t want to waste time arguing that what Larry did wasn’t wrong, no one is arguing that. Beating a dead horse over the internet doesn’t solve anything.
    The responses that aren’t accusatory and condemning are examples of true forgiveness. Larry inspired people here enough that we need to advocate even though we are saddened by his decisions.
    So keep calling names. No one will win. Hopefully through all of this children will become safer, that’s the goal. The Larry issue is dealt with, no more words are needed.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    You evaded the key issue in the question: WHERE is the dividing line?
    My issue with you – and “Fish” is that you are both still in denial. Follett may have been important to you growing up. You still want people to ‘give him a break’ – to let him do jail time and then resume some sort of life.

    When and where does he suddenly stop being a pedophile? And yes, he is a pedophile, – it’s just that nobody has yet proven him to be a child molester. But he had pictures and videos of child molesters in action. He paid money for those images.

    His money subsidized the kidnap, serial rape, and murder of young boys.

    What part of that do you want to ignore, or want me and the general public to ‘go easy’ on?

    Maybe instead of feeling all ooey-gooey about Larry, you should get your young mind around the enormity of this particular field of perverted criminal behavior – and all that is involved world-wide.

    Imagine for instance that your kids were in his classroom. Knowing now that he is sexually attracted to young boys, would you ever let him baby-sit your kids? The TOTAL betrayal of trust by all who let him be a teacher or counselor is his collateral damage.

    You are part of his damage, because you are still shading the definitions between right and wrong, you are still trying to equivocate on his behalf. You are still willing to understand, to overlook, to believe in redemption, and to forgive. But these perverts NEVER change or ‘get well’.

    I absolutely DON’T care if he was himself abused as a kid. I don’t care if his brain is wired differently. And I don’t give a flip if he is gay. He IS a PERVERT. End of story.

    So Murhp, what do you THINK happens to all the kids you read about who mysteriously ‘disappear’? Please pull your head out of your dark place. How much longer do you wish to be a public apologist / public defender for a pervert?

    /s/ Iron Mike

  28. AB Alum with some actual common sense

    AB alum,

    it is a huge problem thinking that accepting diversity can ever be even slightly linked to being more likely to not be as strict with pedofiles.

    You’re trying to sound smart and you’re not.

  29. AB Alum with some actual common sense

    redsox and tmurph,

    you are embarassing youself standing up for a pedofile.

    WITHOUT CREEPY PEDOPHILES LIKE HIM, THERE WOULD BE NO MARKET FOR ABUSING CHILDREN SEXUALLY AND VIDEOTAPING THEM!!!

    AND IF HE HAD THAT DESEASE, HE SHOULDN’T HAVE SPENT ALL OF HIS TIME AROUND YOUNG BOYS IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!

    HE IS A CREEP!

    I WAS A STUDENT OF MR. FOLLETTS AND HE WAS A MASSIVE CREEPER!

    HE WOULD TALK TO SOME STUDENTS ONLINE ON INSTANT MESSAGING!!!!

    A PEDOPHILE SHOULD NOT ALLOW HIMSELF TO BE AROUND CHILDREN ALL DAY EVERY DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    YOU ARE A BAD PERSON IF YOU ARE STANDING UP FOR A PEDOPHILE!
