In the muddy waters of the Great Pee Dee River – some Republicans and most of the RiNOs are running scared.
Yankee politicians are regarded with a healthy degree of distain in the South – as frontrunner Mitt Romney is finding out. Smarting from his 4th place finish in New Hampshire, Newt is gaining ground [remember - he’s from Georgia] while Yankees Romney and Santorum are struggling.
The attack ad ‘King of Bain’ is having an effect – much to the consternation of pundits and Klingons like Rudi Giuliani.
Rick Perry also attacked Romney’s Bain Capital record as ‘vulture capitalism’.
Republicans are very leery when their own attack – or even seem to attack – the core of free market capitalism. Where Newt and Perry have erred is by not clearly praising capitalism as a virtue while leveling valid criticism of some of Romney’s specific deals and decisions.
And in those muddy waters – Republicans of all stripes are suddenly worried that an attack on Mitt looks like an attack on a basic pillar of Republican values. Yesterday Spartanburg investment banker Barry Wynn pulled his support for Rick Perry to endorse [and probably help fund] Mitt Romney.
My question for nervous Republicans and ultra-nervous RiNOs is simply this: ‘What part of your political schooling makes you believe that Romney [if our eventual nominee] won’t be the subject to 3 - 4 months of identical attacks from the Soros-Obama camp?’
If Romney is to stand up to and then beat Obama – South Carolina is mere basic training. This is EXACTLY what the primary process was designed for.
Willard may win – but he won’t get to skate to the finish line. It’s not ice dancing - it’s a hockey game – and he’s going to have to stay on his feet and survive a lot of checks. He should have learned that in Massachusetts.
What he once did so effectively to Jane Swift is now being visited upon him. What goes around – comes around!

The networks say liberal comedian Stephen Colbert is running in South Carolina. Yes it’s a joke, but he is polling ahead of Huntsman.
