I was at Acton-Boxborough Regional High School on Tuesday evening to present a scholarship to a graduating senior. We award this scholarship each year in the amount of $2,000. While I was waiting for my turn (> $300,000 was awarded to over 200 students) I looked around and noticed all the bright shining faces of the expectant students.
I also noticed that there was no American Flag anywhere to be seen. Could this be true? An American High School in an affluent town must be able to afford a flag for the auditorium. Surely I was mistaken. I looked more when I was on stage during my presentation, figuring maybe I just couldn’t see it from my seat. Nope. No flag. Nowhere. I sent a letter to the principal asking for an explanation. I offered to have my American Legion Post buy as many flags as the school needs to show proper consideration to the source of a free education in America.
I wonder if the disdain for America has grown to such a degree that even our schools are ashamed at being identified as American. We all remember the schools that wanted to display the Mexican flag, but not the American flag.
I wonder if this attitude toward our country, our government, our way of life should be reflected the next time the schools ask for their Prop 2-1/2 override. Should we support a school district that doesn’t believe in America? I can only speak for myself. I’ll think twice. rr
