The nearby town of Shirley Mass wakes up to a stunning new political reality this morning!
Yesterday a mere 28% of their registered voters braved a beautiful spring day to cast their ballots. But 53% of those angrily swept aside decades of imbedded old-boy cronyism to liberate themselves from a bloated town government which views their homes as bottomless ATM machines, and town jobs as political plums to be handed out to the voting faithful.
Shirley has a new Selectman! Local business owner and long-time Republican activist Kendra Dumont is Shirley’s new Selectman. Go Kendra!! At last, a town selectman who can actually use a calculator! A lady who understands that those are real people – real families – on the left side of the balance sheet.
While many readers may view a 53% victory margin as a squeaker, – remember that is 1% bigger than Obama’s “mandate”. And that 28% turnout in Shirley is twice their norm for town elections. So take heart Republicans! Even in a town heavily populated with government employees, a deeply entrenched [since ’86] tax-and-spend Democrat can be tossed out of office.
All the more remarkable is that Kendra is the most humble, down-to-earth and unassuming person you’ll ever meet. I know that running for office was the last thing on her mind even a year ago. But when nobody else is willing to bell the cat, a heroine will emerge from the ranks of us ordinary citizens. Kendra, I am proud to know you, and I proudly held your sign! You go Girl! Give ’em HELL!
