111th Congress Flips You Off

Posted December 16th, 2010 by Iron Mike

Just days to Christmas, just weeks left for the 111th Congress, and they’re sending you a very special Christmas Greeting.  You don’t like it?  Tough $hit!

According to some, our federal government ‘runs out of money’ on Saturday.  Two ways to keep it running until the newly elected 112th Congress is sworn in,  a ‘Continuing Resolution”, – or the current plan – an Omnibus Spending Bill.  The one they’re trying to jam through right now is $1,100,000,000,000.oo.  It contains some 6,600 ‘earmarks’ worth $8,300,000,000.oo.

What’s an earmark?

Typically a senator or a congressman will have his staff insert a brief paragraph or two which gives a particular agency a sum of money – and simultaneously directs that agency to deliver it to a pet project or group within that legislator’s home state or district.  Earmarks are often referred to as ‘pork’. Both parties have always done it, but Democrats have been the worst offenders.

For politicians, the beauty of an earmark is that it may get approved unnoticed in the larger bill.  Even better are the understandings that go with it – the kickbacks!  You can generally figure that 10% of a given earmark will come back to the congressman as campaign donations – or maybe jobs for his relatives.

Congressmen often shrug their shoulders and say “Why the fuss,  it’s a tiny fraction of the budget and everybody does it?”   In today’s case that $8.3 Billion is less than 1% of the total.

But it’s still  $8.3 B-I-L-L-I-O-N ! !

And it is essentially dirty money!  No matter how innocent or well intended some of these pork projects are, the money never sees the light of day.  There is ZERO provision to see that it is actually spent as directed, no oversight whatsoever. It has become legalized theft of taxpayer money by our lawmakers.  It’s a big reason why the TEA Parties were in the streets these past two summers.

So Harry Reid’s message to you this Christmas?  You got it!

Hoe Hoe Hoe!  Yeah – you hoes reelected him. You voted to continue doing government business his way. Ho Ho Ho!  He’s good for another six years!  AND, you’ll pay his retirement too.
